EGG: Tell us about you and your classroom.
Colin: I’ve been a Lead Teacher since 2021, and I teach a classroom of ten children between the ages of 4 and 5 years old. We have a wide range of skill sets, and it’s important to me that every child in our classroom feels engaged.
EGG: How is EGG going so far?
Colin: I’m excited about it! EGG Toolkit is helping kids in my classroom learn how to be happy with themselves and good neighbors to the people around them and that is the most valuable thing I can do as a teacher. I’m really happy to be interacting with. I wish this was my only curriculum.

EGG: How does EGG build on your existing skills and support your goals as an early childhood educator?
Colin: I’m learning all of this stuff from EGG Toolkit for the first time, too. The kids are interested in what I’m doing and want to model me, so it’s really important for me to practice techniques we learn from EGG, too. My prerogative as a teacher is beautifully supported by EGG. The real motivation for me as a teacher is helping these kids to be good people, by helping them learn how to listen, be heard, and also understand who they are and what they are feeling.
EGG: Do the kids think EGG is fun?
Colin: Yes! We tend to do activities from EGG at the same time each day, to set a routine with the kids. I choose mealtimes for discussion, because it’s easier for me to get their attention to ask questions about their observations. I also incorporate activities into outside play while they’re moving and use books from EGG during our book reading time. Some of the kids have taken to mindfulness activities pretty quickly, like robot/noodle.
EGG: Is EGG flexible enough for you?
Colin: Our class has been using EGG Toolkit since training in October. Sometimes the class needs more time on a specific module or lesson, so we adjust our pace. The activities are easy and broadly applicable across the skill levels of my students. I’m able to make the questions challenging for more advanced kids and simpler for less advanced kids.

EGG: How does EGG make your job easier?
Colin: One of the nicest things for me as a teacher is having consistent books being recommended to me instead of finding books on my own. EGG is well-organized, so I know what I’m reading next week and can prepare questions to ask for different skill levels. There are simple, guided activities with a convenient planning guide which has made EGG really easy to implement.
EGG: What differences are you noticing in your classroom since you began using EGG?
Colin: The kids have practiced using a lot of vocabulary to talk about what they’re feeling, what it means, and what they can do about it. When I see the kids doing things completely on their own, I typically see them breathing intentionally. Specifically with calming techniques, I’ve noticed the children are much quicker to help each other and offer suggestions to each other than they were before. They go to the “calm space” in our classroom and utilize the techniques from EGG that we’re working on together.

EGG: Any other last thoughts?
Colin: EGG has helped kids in my classroom learn how to be heard and be able to hear each other. Preschool is a precious time. Kids are gaining social and emotional insights of who they are and what they’re feeling, which is important to me. We have a very social classroom, and EGG helps the kids listen and communicate well with each other.
